Georgetown University is committed to educating our community about the threats associated with identity theft. Identity theft is a criminal offense and it happens every day to unsuspecting people all over the world. Research from Gartner, Inc., a technology research and analysis firm, indicates that identity theft is a growing problem and that:

  • 57 million adults in the United States believe they have received a fraudulent e-mail requesting personal information
  • 1.78 million adults in the United States remember giving 'phishers' their sensitive financial or personal information by filling in a form on a 'spoof' website
  • Nearly 1 million people have suffered from identity theft fraud ... costing banks and credit institutions $1.2 billion in direct losses
  • If measures are not put into place to combat e-mail scams and online identity theft, consumer trust will erode and annual U.S. eCommerce growth will slow to 10% or less by 2007
  • Already, 63 million U.S. adults pay their bills online

Visit this site often, we will update it with news, alerts and resources for our community.
